What has been your relationship to awareness and activism?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for August 05, 2008:
this is really an interesting question,
one i already pondered about from time to time.
i think that personal change is the most effective
and important way of changing the world,
still i see great value in activism.
for example the work people do at avaaz.org, or the many people
worrying about the protection of data privacy are doing very important work.
for me personal evolution and activism are nourishing each other,
the activist will last longer and avoid exploiting himself if he is doing for example yoga,
also the perspective changes with any transpersonal practice
away from dogmatism and confrontation towards
understanding and more tao-like approaches.
the silly idea that throwing bombs would do any good
seems more unlikely for a meditating person.
and on the other hand people whose awareness has risen
for whatever issue get the tools to DO SOMETHING about it
or at least learn something about it,
from activists who are working on that issue and know it quite well,
so that not everyone has to invent the wheel again.
in the end i see society more and more like a living eco system,
with different groups and people filling different gaps,
doing different jobs.
so my focus shifts from "what work is more important" or
"what approach is right or wrong" to:
how can the different structures complement each other?
how can different pathes effectivly communicate with each other?
and with which other approaches i wish to resonate with?
